Newspapers in Education
Learning through the daily newspaper
About Newspapers in Education
The Newspapers in Education (NIE) programme is one of CISK's most engaging cross-curricular initiatives. By bringing real-world events directly into the classroom through the daily newspaper, NIE transforms passive reading into active, contextual learning that goes well beyond textbook content.
About the Programme
Through NIE, students engage with a curated daily newspaper supplement designed specifically for school children. The content connects current affairs, social issues, scientific developments, sports, arts, and culture to subjects students study every day. Teachers integrate news articles into lesson plans across English, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics, helping students see the immediate relevance of what they learn. Beyond just reading, students participate in discussions, debates, news quizzes, editorial-writing exercises, and current-affairs projects that deepen their understanding of the world around them.
Why This Matters
In an age of information overload, the ability to read critically, distinguish fact from opinion, and form well-reasoned views has become a vital life skill. NIE develops these competencies organically — students naturally improve vocabulary, comprehension, and analytical thinking while also becoming informed, engaged young citizens who care about their community, country, and the wider world.
