Sagar-Mitra
Environmental awareness — friends of the sea
About Sagar-Mitra
Sagar-Mitra — meaning "Friends of the Sea" in Marathi — is a meaningful environmental education programme that has had a remarkable impact at CISK. Founded by environmentalist Vinod Bodhankar, the programme empowers students to become active stewards of the environment by addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time: ocean pollution and irresponsible waste disposal.
About the Programme
The Sagar-Mitra programme begins with awareness — students learn about the journey of waste, especially plastic, from homes and streets to rivers and ultimately to oceans, where it harms marine life and ecosystems. From there, the focus shifts to action. Students practise daily waste segregation at school and at home, separating dry and wet waste, properly handling plastic, and reducing single-use items. They also participate in community activities like beach and river cleanups, tree-planting drives, awareness campaigns, and peer education. The programme connects students directly to the larger environmental movement and shows them that small daily choices add up to significant impact.
Why This Matters
Environmental degradation is no longer a distant problem — it shapes the world today's students will inherit. Sagar-Mitra bridges awareness and action, giving children a sense of agency rather than helplessness. The habits and values formed through this programme — responsibility, mindfulness, community engagement, and respect for nature — extend far beyond environmental issues into every aspect of life and citizenship.
